It’s four in the morning on a night that will never end.

“Did you call an ambulance yet?” I ask full well knowing the answer.

You shake your head. “He doesn’t want me to.”

“We could drive him. But that would mean waking the kids.”

You don’t respond.

I sigh. “Well, at least he’s awake…”

“Yeah,” you say, but you’re a million miles away.

“What was he hit with?”

You look at me then. “A bat, he thinks.”

“Dear God.”

“Are you going to tell me what’s in the box?” you ask and I know if you really wanted to know, you’d have already looked yourself. I hand it to you, and I watch your face as you open it.

You pull out the note and you read. You stare at it for so long I’m not sure what to think.

What does it say?” I ask. I haven’t read it because I hadn’t really wanted to know. Now I do.

You look over at me. “An eye for an eye.”

“Well, I guess that explains the eyeball,” I tell you and this time you don’t look away.
